Basic Tropical Storm & Hurricane Facts

The first thing to understand about tropical storms and hurricanes is what they really are. Tropical storms forms over water and move toward land. Some tropical storms grow into hurricanes. Hurricanes have wind speeds greater than tropical depressions and tropical storms, and threats from hurricanes include powerful winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, possible tornadoes. Hurricane strengths fall into one of five categories, as shown below.

TROPICAL STORM WATCH
Tropical storm conditions with sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph in the area within 48 hours.

TROPICAL STORM WARNING
Tropical storm conditions with sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph in the area within 36 hours.

HURRICANE WATCH
Hurricane conditions with sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are possible within the specified area in 48 hours .Keep yourself informed through local TV and /or Radio stations on the progress of the storm .Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force ,the hurricane watch is issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical-storm-force winds.

HURRICANE WARNING
Hurricane conditions with sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected within 36 hours. Because hurricane preparedness activities become difficult once winds reach tropical storm force, the hurricane warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical-storm-force winds.
